Rätansbyn - First day

2007-07-17 01:44

When a car with warning signs suddenly overhauls you, a wonder crosses your mind. Martin soon discovered what was about to happen, when he took a look in the driving mirror. There came an enormously big truck with an enormous load in high speed. Even tough we were holding legal 80 km/h he overhauled us, forcing a meeting car to do an emergency manoeuvre to not get hit by the truck. Soon he had passed us with his wining tires and rooming exhaust pipes.

We arrived to Gällivare, where Evalld Nordvall from “Evallds Forestry & Wood” came and met us. With him, he brought his family and he had arranged some fuel for us at his company. The wood was so dry, that it was difficult to process it in the wood hacker. We split most of the wood by hand and it became really luxury fuel. It took a couple of hours, and Edvalld brought us some coffee and something to eat. When all wood was processed, we invited Edvalld for a ride in the car. The Norrlanders seems to be nicer and nicer, the further north you go.

We continued north on highway 45 and Micke became funny in his tummy. Lucky, we found a forestry toilet, which Micke could use.

We came out fare in the wilderness. The car ran really well and the engine ignited smoothly on all cylinders. It was time for fuelling the gas producer and we stopped on a parking lot, opposite a house in the small village of Moskojärvi. Suddenly while we were fuelling, there were a noise from the engine and a big puddle of cooling fluid appeared under the car. It was one of the hoses to the cabin heater that had broken. We felt lucky it wasn’t the cylinder head gasket.

The house on the opposite side of the road was an old British Petroleum gas station. There lives Mikael Söderberg. His friend Alf Johansson (Swede Viking) came out and we became friends. After a while Mikael came out too, and he fixed a new hosing for us. After a couple of hours of pulling in the old hosing and pressing the new one in place, the system was sealed. We had to put the new hosing in a bend, so it wouldn’t wrinkle.

It became late, and Mikael invited us to stay in one of his bungalows that he otherwise rents out. We took a walk around the area and inspected an old loading shovel that he has. If anyone knows which model it is or has a shaft that fits, please let us know.

We’ve now cooked some food. To morrow we’ll sleep through the morning.

/Johan
